1) Here’s your first look at Paul Giamatti as The Rhino in ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2′. Director Marc Webb tweeted this photo of the actor as Aleksei Sytsevich, a Russian mafia thug who undergoes a rhino grafting experiment, getting horns and an armor. He looks pretty happy about it…
2) ‘The Great Gatsby’ did better than expected at the box office, with $51.1 million on it’s opening weekend here in the US, number two after ‘Iron Man 3′ but still impressive because of the terrible reviews (48% on Rotten Tomatoes). Meanwhile Iron Man 3′s $72.4 million over the weekend takes it’s worldwide total to $948.993 million… heading up to one billion.
3) Speaking of ‘Iron Man 3′ and Robert Downey Jr, who is so hot right now… he’ll be working with ‘Iron Man’ director Jon Favreau on an indie comedy called ‘Chef’, about a chef who starts up his own food truck. Jon is selling the film’s international rights at Cannes, and after the success these two have had in the past, I’m thinking it will be an easy sell!
Got spare time this weekend? Feel like catching a flick? Here’s my handy rundown of what’s worth your dollaaas yo! (me being gangster)
New in cinemas: IRON MAN 3 (funny, good action, interesting twists. Worth the cash to see it in IMAX, or if not choose the 2D option. 3D adds nothing)
Still in cinemas: PAIN & GAIN (dark edgy humor, The Rock is fantastic, energetic direction)
On iTunes: SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (Oscar nominee & winner for Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper is the best he’s been, quirky humorous love story)
On Netflix: PULP FICTION (an oldie but a goodie… so much dark humor, violence and awesome dialogue here. Re-watch!!)
Newish in cinemas: IRON MAN 3 (better than any of the new new releases)
Still in cinemas: THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (not for everyone, but a really interesting film experiment about the vicious circle of violence, GOSLING’S IN IT)
On Foxtel: 21 JUMP ST (showing 8:30pm Sat May 4 on Comedy, Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum make a hilarious team, silly good fun)
1) Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ had its World Premiere in New York last night, Variety has some photos, including the above with the sort of unlikely trio of Tobey Maguire, Jay-Z and Leonardo DiCaprio. One of the (many) great things Baz’s films always have is a killer soundtrack, and I cannot wait to hear this one, executive produced by Jay-Z. I think I wore my ‘Romeo & Juliet’ CD soundtrack out by playing it over and over!
Me and the wonderful Tiffany Smith, aka my eye candy for the week, discuss whether we think ‘Iron Man 3′ is the best in the series.
Be sure to watch Tiffany’s comic book show ‘Stacked’ right here . She’s the best. I adore her.
I got to mix it with the stars (safely behind a barricade) at the World Premiere for ‘Iron Man 3′.
Director Shane Black told me why Christmas is the best time to set a journey movie, ‘The Avengers’ director Joss Whedon linked Shakespeare and comic book characters, Sir Ben Kingsley renamed Iron Man “Vulnerable Man” (he’s a Sir, he’s allowed), Gwyneth Paltrow talked about what she wanted for Pepper on her fourth time around, Guy Pearce remembered my dress from the press junket the day before, Don Cheadle chatted about the relationship between Stark and Rhodes, and Robert Downey Jr mentioned Tostadas. Why? Watch and see!
Don Cheadle was trying to teach me how to make a fist bump cool…
Me: “I used to call it fisting, until… I realized… That… was not correct. At all.”
Don: (shocked look before laughing) “Is that kind of humor where this interview is going?”
Me: “No, I have to be serious!”
Don: “Damn, that would be the best interview ever!!”
Robert Downey Jr: “Wow, I’m so glad you noticed that. You think you’re going to get the same boring crap at these press junkets…”
Me: “How about a hug?”
RDJ: (pauses for what seems like an eternity) “Ummmm… Yes. Come here you get a hug!”
He doesn’t usually shake hands or anything, so this was a good way to end my 2 minute (no joke) interview!
Malone’s Movie Minute: Comic-Con Day Three, The Hobbit, Iron Man 3 & The Campaign
A minute of chats with Robert Downey Jr about the Extremis series, Peter Jackson on the possibility of a third Hobbit film, and Will Ferrell & Zach Galifianakis from The Campaign smell my microphone. Saucy.
UPDATE: Peter Jackson has confirmed a third Hobbit film is definitely happening! Whoop!
